Why We Started Growing Mushrooms & Our Story

We stumbled the miracle of mushrooms when we were researching healthier alternatives for managing our incurable auto-immune disorders.

When we found out that Turkey Tail, Black Reishi and Antler Reishi were considered miracle fungi; suggesting that they heal cancer tumors, heal digestive ailments, high blood pressure, chronic migraines, severe inflammation—the list goes on—we were intrigued.  We tried endless natural suggestions like herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits all stating their “miracle” fixes to our specific auto-immune disorders.  Our skepticism was profound toward the mushroom claims!  It was hard to believe that anything would work for either of us since everything else has failed or only provided minor improvements.  Finally, we just said, “Well, this is one thing we haven’t tried.”

I started taking the Turkey Tail and Antler Reishi dried and ground up for my auto-immune disorder called Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome!

It has brought my attacks down to almost 2 to 5 every 4 to 8 months.  What is Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome, you ask?  It is an extremely rare autoimmune disorder that causes repeated, unexplained cycles of severe nausea and vomiting that can last a few hours to a few days.  It took 9 years of being in and out of the hospital to finally have a panel of nationwide gastrointestinal doctors to finally diagnose me in Denver, CO.  This diagnosis did not come with any suggestion of how to manage it.  I just had to deal with it.  I was now considered 100% disabled by the medical community and the U.S. government.  Relieved to have an answer, I was still left devastated to have no idea what to do other than suffer for the rest of my life. I took every prescribed drug by gastro intestinal doctors you can imagine. The prescription that did work was amitriptyline. I took that for about 5 years and it worked well. About 2 years ago the amitriptyline back fired and stopped working, actually making my condition worse. Even being exposed in the sun was a factor. My face was getting patches of scabs from the medication and direct sunlight. This was a constant battle since I worked outside for my career. I also started going to a chiropractor that practices methylation, who is one of the best in the Pacific Northwest. Every food I eat along with every prescribed drug I take, I get tested for by this chiropractor to see if my system agrees with it. He warned me for 2 years for about amitriptyline and he was right! Eventually, with much dismay, I had to stop taking the amitriptyline. Back to square one, I began searching for another solution and that’s how my wife and I stumbled upon Turkey Tail and Red Reishi.

Medicinal Mushrooms Helping Many Conditions

From autoimmune disorders, cancer, Inflammation, psychiatric therapy, addiction, and meat alternatives, mushrooms are helping many people. My wife was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis, also known as, Crohn’s Disease about 5 years ago. More and more people are being diagnosed with this awful autoimmune more than ever before. After a week and a half of my wife using a teaspoon to a tablespoon of our own Antler Reishi (grown in our top-of-the-line mushroom farmhouse, using the finest substrates with the highest quality mushroom growing equipment) her knees, ankles, hands, feet and all her joints were completely inflammation free!  She was able to walk without wincing!  She was able to squat down and get back up with ease again!  She could not believe it!!  Even her severe flare-ups were subsiding. So, she said she was going to do an experiment.  She decided to stop taking it.  After two days of not taking at least a tablespoon of ground, dried Antler Reishi every day, her inflammation and pain came back.  It was true.  Antler Reishi truly heals!

We urge you to try a medicinal mushroom or just adding more gourmet, culinary mushrooms to your diet.  If you are suffering from an incurable disorder or symptoms from aging or maybe you just want to eat healthier or a chef, please give us a call or drop us a cyber message.  We would love to guide you in the right direction.

Our Experience With The World of Mushrooms & Mycology!

My journey with wild mushrooms started when I was a young boy growing up amongst the many hardwoods of the Midwest in the U.S.

I don’t know how many times in the summer my friends and I would find Turkey Tail, Oyster, Lion’s Mane, Puffball, and Morel mushrooms on the hardwood stumps and around the dead trees! Being raised in the country there wasn’t much to do but tear around the woods and swampy areas of the surrounding lakes. It’s a mushroom paradise! Back then in the 80’s, people believed that a lot of the wild mushrooms were poisonous, not all, but most folks did and most folks were wrong!

I listened some of the old-timers who did know which mushrooms were which and it sparked my curiosity. I started reading text books about growing mushrooms and mycology. We did not have all the technology there is today. You had to order a book, wait 2 weeks to get it to even begin to learn it! I am not a college-educated man with any mycology degree and I never would claim to be. I am a self taught mycologist with several years of experience straight from text to trial and error. I learned the hard way by making mistakes. Now with the more advanced mushroom growing supplies and access to more learning material for mycology, it can be very confusing. I decided I don’t want anyone to experience what I did, so I have simplified the art of growing mushrooms for anyone who loves them!

My Wife and I started Merry Mushroom Maidens to help others and to keep studying these magical mushrooms to benefit everyone in the future. We have designed our online store to be as simple as possible to shop with excellent customer service (YES, you can get a real human to answer the phone)! We will provide you with in-depth education of mycology and the cultivation of mushrooms. We encourage you to call us with your unanswered questions during our normal business hours.
