Grow Your Own Mushrooms: A Beginner's Guide to Merry Mushroom Maidens' Mushroom Grow Kits
Welcome to the enchanting world of home mushroom cultivation! At Merry Mushroom Maidens, we are passionate about bringing the magic of fungi right to your doorstep. Our easy-to-use mushroom grow kits are designed for beginners allowing you to harvest fresh, delicious mushrooms in less than a couple weeks. Imagine plucking nutrient-packed gourmet mushrooms from your own home—sustainable, fun, and very rewarding.
Our grow kits have the perfect variety of mushrooms that are a fantastic choice for your first mushroom grow. Whether you choose our Lion’s Mane or Oyster varieties, their umami flavor is perfect for stir-fries, soups, or even tacos. Plus, they are a powerhouse of protein, fiber, and antioxidants. With our mushroom grow kits, you will experience the thrill of watching mycelium (the "roots" of the mushroom) transform into bountiful clusters. Ready to dive in? Let's get growing!
What is in Your Merry Mushroom Maidens Grow Kit?
Our mushroom kits arrive ready-to-grow, with everything you need for success EXCEPT the spray bottle. We believe in reducing waste!
- Pre-inoculated masters mix mushroom Substrate Block: A compact bag of nutrient-rich substrate made with 50% oak and 50% soy hulls fully colonized with culinary and medicinal mushroom mycelium.
- Custom Made Grow Kit Box: A sturdy, breathable box that serves as your mini greenhouse. There is a perforated circle you can remove to expose the colonized substrate and start growing fungi! Our mushroom kits are custom made to bring the largest mushroom harvest or (flush) on the market.
- Growing Instructions: Simple guidelines printed right on the box (but we will cover them here in detail!).
- Optional Add-Ons: We recommend a clean misting bottle (available at most garden stores) for hydration. Our experience with the small spray bottles sold with most mushroom kits fail in a short period of time and end up in the trash. Get a quality spray bottle from your local retailer.
No fancy equipment required—just your curiosity and a little patience.
Step-by-Step: Activating Your Mushroom Kit
Follow these simple steps to kick off your growing adventure. The whole process takes about 10-15 minutes to set up.
Step 1: Choose the Perfect Spot
- Find a warm spot in your home with indirect light. Ideal temperatures are 65-75°F (18-24°C). You can also use a small led grow light and place your grow kit anywhere.
- Avoid direct sunlight, drafts, running fans, or areas near vents. Mushrooms love consistency! Blowing air can dry out your mushroom grow kit slowing down the growing process.
- Pro Tip: If you're in a drier climate consider placing it near a humidifier for extra moisture.
Step 2: Open the Box and Prepare the Substrate
- Locate the perforated circle on the front of the cardboard box (it is marked for easy access).
- Push in on the perforated circle to create an opening—this is where your mushrooms will fruit! Toss the circle in the trash.
- Wipe down the clear round perforated opening with a clean towel. You can use 70% isopropyl alcohol if you prefer but not mandatory.
Step 3: Expose the Mycelium
- Inside the box, you will see the substrate bag with the white mycelium inside. Carefully cut an X-shaped incision through the plastic bag, right over the perforated hole. This allows fresh air to reach the mycelium and triggers "pinning" (the baby mushrooms forming). Do not worry about cutting into the colonized substrate.
- Do not worry if it looks a bit messy—the mycelium is resilient!
Step 4: Mist and Monitor
- Mist the exposed area 2-3 times a day— we usually spray once in the morning, once in the evening, and once right before bed. Aim for a light, even spray to keep the surface moist but not soggy. Think dewy, not drenched. If you miss a spraying time do not worry, we make our mushroom grow kits with just the right amount of moisture for a backup.
In 7-14 days, you will spot tiny white "pins" emerging. These will mature into full clusters in another week. Patience is key—mushrooms grow on their own timeline!
Harvesting Your Bountiful Crop When your mushrooms reach full maturity before the spores drop!
- Twist and Pull: Gently twist the cluster at the base and pull it away from the substrate.
- Yield Expectation: Your first flush (harvest) typically yields 1.5-2 pounds of fresh mushrooms depending on the strain purchased. Store or cook right away. Store extras in a paper bag in the fridge for up to a week, or dry them for longer storage. We have had Shiitake last for up to 2 weeks. ALWAYS cook mushrooms before eating!
Getting 2 Flushes: Maximize Your Yield of Mushrooms.
The beauty of our kits? They keep on giving! With proper care, you can expect up to 2 flushes (harvest cycles) from a single block.
- After the first harvest or flush simply open the top of the box and reposition your mushroom grow bag to a spot with fresh mycelium in the circle. Cut a new X, spray and away you go for a second flush!
- Resume misting 2-3 times daily. The second flush may take 1-2 weeks to appear and could be slightly smaller, but it is just as delicious.
- We have had customers do a 3rd flush re-soaking the colonized substrate bag in water to re hydrate the grow block. This depends entirely on how dry your geographic area can be!! When you know your grow kit is done producing mushrooms, just cut off the plastic, remove the block. Mushroom substrate is a phenomenal choice to put in a garden or compost. It keeps the soil healthy—mushrooms love giving back to the earth.
- Eco-Friendly Note: Our kits use sustainable, locally sourced materials. The box and the substrate are compostable. The only thing that goes in the trash is the plastic covering (the mycology world is trying to find a better way, believe us!) Growing at home reduces your carbon footprint—yay for planet-friendly fungi!

6 lb. Shiitake mushroom Grow kit:
Easy Home Shiitake: Our 6 lb. Shiitake Mushroom Grow Kit with Custom Humidity Dome
Bring the rich, earthy flavor—and impressive health perks—of fresh shiitake mushrooms right to your kitchen with Merry Mushroom Maidens' 6 lb Shiitake mushroom grow kit. This ready-to-fruit block is fully colonized with vigorous Shiitake mycelium on our premium hardwood-based substrate (80% Midwest oak pellets + 20% wheat bran), delivering multiple generous flushes of meaty, umami-packed caps perfect for stir-fries, soups, grilling, or drying.
Shiitake are not just delicious—they are a nutritional powerhouse. Rich in B vitamins (like riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid), copper, selenium, manganese, zinc, and dietary fiber, they provide essential minerals for immune support, bone health, and energy metabolism. Shiitake contain bioactive compounds like beta glucans (including lentinan) and, eritadenine which research links to:
- Immune Boosting — Studies show daily consumption increases immune cell activity (e.g., γδ-T and NK-T cells), enhances gut immunity via higher sIgA, and reduces inflammation markers like CRP.
- Heart Health — Eritadenine helps lower cholesterol levels, while beta-glucans reduce inflammation and limit cholesterol absorption.
- Antioxidant & Anti-Inflammatory Effects — Polysaccharides and other compounds combat oxidative stress and support overall cellular health.
- Potential Additional Benefits — Preclinical research suggests antimicrobial, antiviral, and anticancer properties (e.g., lentinan stimulating immune responses), though more human studies are needed.
Always cook Shiitake thoroughly before eating for best digestibility and nutrient absorption.
Designed for beginners and busy growers, this kit includes a custom-fitted humidity dome to create the ideal moist microclimate Shiitake love—high humidity (85–95%) without constant misting. No fancy setup required—just follow these simple steps to activate and harvest.
Quick Activation & Fruiting Instructions
- Smack the Mushroom Grow Bag! Give the substrate block a firm but gentle smack on all sides—this represents a tree falling in the forest. This physical shock helps trigger pinning by mimicking natural disturbance and signals the mycelium to start fruiting.
- Remove The Bag Covering the Block. Carefully take the block out of its grow bag over your kitchen sink. Then run your tap water at room temperature and give your Shiitake mushroom block a good rinse. You can then place your colonized Shiitake grow block on a clean plate or tray inside your growing area (indirect light, 60–65°F). Shiitake love cooler temperatures 65 is ideal.
- Set up The Custom Made Re-Usable Humidity Dome. Open the included custom humidity dome and spray the inside of the grow dome and over the block to trap moisture and maintain the perfect environment.
- Mist and maintain. Spray the exposed top and sides of the block lightly with clean water. Mist the inside walls of the dome generously to create a dewy, humid atmosphere. Mist 1–2 times daily (or as needed to keep surfaces moist but not soggy). Make sure there is always condensation on the inside of you grow dome! (especially during pinning)
- Watch your Shiitakes Fruit! Tiny white pins appear in 7–14 days, maturing into full Shiitake clusters in another 5–10 days. Harvest by twisting or cutting at the base when caps flatten but edges are still curled.
Repeat this process for 2–4 flushes total—Do Not re-smack the block you will have a mess in your workspace! You can re-hydrate Shiitake grow blocks under tap water! Harvests will decrease slightly with each cycle but remain delicious and nutrient-dense. After the final harvest, compost the block or bury it in your garden to enrich the soil.
Why Shiitake in a Dome Kit?
- Shiitake thrive in stable, high-humidity conditions; the dome eliminates guesswork and reduces drying out.
- Our pre-colonized 6 lb. block means faster results and bigger mushrooms than smaller kits.
- Sustainable Midwest oak substrate supports authentic flavor, texture, and those potent health compounds.

Antler Reishi Mushroom Grow kits:
Discover the Medicinal Power of Antler Reishi: The Easiest & Most Potent Kit from Merry Mushroom Maidens
Among our lineup of grow kits, the Antler Reishi Mushroom Grow Kit stands out as the easiest to use—requiring minimal effort while delivering one of the most revered medicinal mushrooms available. Known scientifically as Ganoderma lucidum (or closely related species like G. lingzhi), the antler form features elongated, branching "antlers" instead of the classic kidney-shaped cap. This unique morphology often results in higher concentrations of key bioactive compounds compared to traditional fruiting bodies, making it a powerhouse for wellness.
Reishi, dubbed the "Mushroom of Immortality" in traditional Chinese medicine, has been valued for over 2,000 years for promoting longevity, vitality, and overall balance. Modern research highlights its rich profile of polysaccharides (like beta-glucans), triterpenoids (ganoderic acids), and other compounds that contribute to its adaptogenic and therapeutic effects.
Key Medicinal Benefits of Antler Reishi
- Immune System Support — Reishi modulates immunity by influencing white blood cells (T cells, NK cells, macrophages) and cytokines. Beta-glucans enhance immune response, helping the body resist infections and maintain balance—ideal for daily wellness or during stress/cold seasons.
- Antioxidant & Anti-Inflammatory Effects — Potent triterpenoids and polysaccharides combat oxidative stress and inflammation, supporting cellular health and reducing markers like CRP. Studies show antler forms may produce elevated levels of phenolics, flavonoids, and ganodermin for stronger antioxidant activity.
- Stress Reduction & Adaptogenic Benefits — As a true adaptogen, Reishi helps the body cope with physical and mental stress, promoting relaxation, better sleep, and reduced fatigue. It supports the adrenal system without overstimulation.
- Heart & Cardiovascular Health — Compounds like eritadenine lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while beta-glucans reduce inflammation and support healthy circulation—contributing to long-term cardiovascular protection.
- Potential Anti-Cancer Support — Lab and animal studies indicate Reishi promotes cancer cell death, inhibits tumor growth, and boosts quality of life alongside conventional treatments by enhancing immune surveillance (e.g., via natural killer cells). Human evidence is promising but ongoing.
- Liver Protection & Metabolic Support — Hepatoprotective effects help shield the liver from toxins; it may also aid blood sugar regulation and metabolic balance in conditions like diabetes or obesity.
Note: While preclinical and traditional evidence is strong, consult a healthcare professional before using Reishi medicinally, especially if on medications (e.g., blood thinners or immunosuppressants), this is especially true with Black Reishi, not necessarily Red Reishi. Dry and extract properly for best bioavailability—our kit produces beautiful antlers ideal for teas, tinctures, or dual-extraction.
This kit's simplicity—pre-colonized substrate in a bag, easy fruiting setup—makes harvesting your own potent Antler Reishi accessible and rewarding. Grow massive medicinal yields at home and experience why Reishi has earned its legendary status.

Bag Tek with Our 6lb All-in-One Grow Bag
Bag Tek (short for "bag technique") is a straightforward, low-maintenance method popular among home mycologists for growing mushrooms directly in a sealed, filter-patched grow bag—minimizing contamination risk and eliminating the need for separate fruiting chambers or complex transfers. With Merry Mushroom Maidens' 6lb All-in-One Grow Bag, this tek becomes even easier: the bag arrives pre-sterilized with a nutrient-rich grain layer (Rye or Milo) topped with premium CVG substrate, plus a self-healing injection port and gas-exchange filter. Simply inject your isolated spores into the grain, incubate in a warm, dark spot until fully colonized, then break up and mix the contents. Once the entire block is white with mycelium, initiate fruiting by cutting a small slit on the filter patch, providing fresh air. Burp your mushroom bag 2 times a day with fresh air to remove Co2 from the surface of your mushroom substrate. Do not spray the inside of your mushroom grow bag with water our grow bags are made with the right moisture content to make your mycelium thrive! This tells your mycelium it is time to pin. Mushrooms pin and mature right in the bag for 2 generous flushes—perfect for beginners seeking big yields with minimal fuss. Shop at merrymushroommaidens.com and turn your kitchen into a mini mushroom farm today! This all-in-one system is perfect for home growers aiming for impressive harvests of gourmet or medicinal mushrooms. Expect substantial yields—2 flushes—with minimal effort. Watch our instructional video here for a visual walkthrough.
What's Included in Your 6lb All-in-One Bag?
- Total Weight: 6 pounds of sterilized bulk substrate
- Grain Layer: 3 lbs. of hydrated, sterilized grain spawn (Rye or Milo) with an injection port for easy inoculation.
- Substrate Layer: 3 lbs. of premium CVG or CVG manure mix for optimal fruiting conditions for large flushes.
- Features: Durable Unicorn mushroom grow bags with filter patch for gas exchange, and self-healing injection port,
- Made in the USA: Sterilized and sealed for contamination resistance.
This bag supports a wide range of species, especially dung-loving or non-wood loving varieties (check compatibility with your chosen strain).
Materials You'll Need
- Isolated spore syringe, spore syringe, (not included—purchase separately).
- 70% isopropyl alcohol and flame (for sterilization).
- Clean workspace.
- Incubation space (warm, dark, 70–75 deg F ideal).
- Fruiting area (indirect light, or small grow light 68-75 deg F ideal) depending on mushroom strain being cultivated
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare for Inoculation (Sterile Technique is Key!)
- Work in a still-air box, in front of a flow hood, or in the cleanest area possible.
- Wipe the bag's injection port and your work surface with 70% isopropyl alcohol. DO NOT USE 90% percent alcohol it dissipates too quickly from surfaces leaving behind harmful bacteria.
- Shake your isolated spore syringe or also called liquid culture well to break up and distribute mycelium evenly before injecting into the sterilized grain spawn.
2. Inoculate the Bag
- Locate the self-healing injection port on the bag and sterilize needle red hot then wipe needle with Alcohol prep pad and let dry before inserting needle into injection port.
- Insert the needle through the port and inject 1-3 cc (ml) of isolated spore solution into the grain layer.
- Withdraw the needle slowly; the port seals itself.
3. Incubation Phase (Colonization)
- Place the bag in a warm, dark spot (ideal: 72-78°F).
- Avoid direct light or extreme temperature swings especially high heat.
- Check every few days—white mycelium should start spreading from injection point and the underside of the grow bag within 5–10 days.
- Full colonization of the grain typically takes 2–3 weeks, depending on temperature and strain.
4. Break And Shake
- Once the grain is fully white and colonized with mycelium, gently break up and mix the grain into the substrate layer (massage the bag thoroughly but gently to combine the two substrates evenly without damaging the bag).
- Continue incubating at same temperatures as above until the entire substrate bag is fully colonized—usually another 2–3 weeks. Look for dense, white mycelium throughout.
4. Initiate Fruiting
- Once fully colonized, move the bag to desired fruiting chamber or do the Bag-Technique.
- Maintain high humidity (85–95%)
- Pins (baby mushrooms) appear in 7–14 days; full mature mushrooms in another 3–7 days depending on strain of mushroom.
Tips for Success & Troubleshooting
- Contamination? Green/blue mold means bacteria discard and start fresh. Always prioritize sterility.
- Slow Colonization? Check temperature; too cold slows growth.
- Storage: Keep unopened bags in a dark clean cool area (do not freeze).
- Safety: Cook all mushrooms before eating; research your species.
- Eco Tip: Spent bulk mushroom substrate makes excellent garden compost!
Our 6lb All-in-One bags are built for reliability—thousands of happy growers choose them for consistent results. For more visuals, check the video linked above.
