  Storage and Handling Guide for C.V.G. manure Substrate

  To ensure your mushrooms have the cleanest possible start, it is important to handle and store your Merry Mushroom Maidens 4 lb. C.V.G. Manure Substrate correctly. Because our products are made with top-of-the-line equipment for professional pasteurization and sterilization in a controlled environment, following these steps will help maintain that purity until you are ready to grow.

  1. Storage Location

  • Keep it Cool and Dark: Store your substrate bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A closet or a climate-controlled dark room is ideal. 

  • Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Do not leave the bag in a garage or shed where it might be exposed to high heat or freezing temperatures, as this can affect the moisture balance and introduce contamination.

  2. Shelf Life

  • Use Promptly for Best Results: While our sterilization process is thorough, we recommend using your substrate within 2–4 weeks of arrival to ensure the best moisture levels for your mushrooms

  3. Sterile Handling

  • Clean Your Space: When you are ready to mix your substrate with your colonized  grain spawn, ensure your workspace is thoroughly cleaned and free of drafts.

  • Wipe the Bag: Use 70% isopropyl alcohol to wipe down the outside of the substrate bag before opening it to prevent any dust or surface contaminants from falling inside.

  • Use Clean Tools: Always wear gloves and use sanitized tools when handling the substrate to maintain the "guaranteed" quality we provide from our Missouri facility.

  4. Once Opened 

  Use the Whole Bag: It is best to use the entire 4 lb. bag at once. If you must save a portion, reseal it as tightly as possible, though we cannot guarantee continued sterility once the original factory seal is broken.
